ain’t nothing but a hound dog

it is officially psych day 2, and i cannot help but love the psych patients, something that could quite possibly wear off.

but today – today was excellent. in 6100, i have continually passed this one patient who always wears a purple trucker hat, a corduroy blazer, jeans, and a t-shirt. the first time i walked past him, he does a little jig with his feet, perhaps trying to impress me. while i have no idea why he’s doing this, i just smile and continue on my way. other times when i pass him, he does the same jig, throws out both his arms, and at the top of his lungs, in a surprisingly good voice, belts out “YOU AIN’T NOTHIN’ BUT A HOUND DOG” and stops there. that was yesterday.

today he had new victims. he walks up to two other students unfamiliar with him.

“hi, i’m elvis.” and shakes their hands. then out of nowhere belts out that one line again. he repeats this later in the day with me, but since i find this extremely enjoyable, i ask him if he knows the rest of the song, which of course he does, and he continues to sing the remainder of that verse or chorus…whatever it’s called.

as i relate this story to one of my best friends on the rotation with me (meg), she laughs and says “you would encourage a patient with a psychosis.” but hey – he’s good and he clearly is proud of his talent.
